The Different Types of Asphalt Surfacing

When it comes to asphalt, there are different types that are used for various purposes. Depending on the climate, traffic, and surrounding environment, one type of asphalt may be a better choice over another. In this blog post, we will go over the different types of asphalt so that you can make an informed decision when it comes time to resurface your property.

Type I Asphalt

Type I asphalt is also known as hot mix asphalt and is the most commonly used type for resurfacing projects. This type is made with a mixture of bitumen and coarse aggregate that is heated to between 300-350 degrees Fahrenheit. After being mixed together, the hot mixture is then placed on top of the existing surface where it cooled and hardened.

Type II Asphalt

Type II asphalt is also known as medium mix asphalt and is often used in areas with high traffic but not extreme weather conditions. This type is made with a mixture of bitumen and fine aggregate that is heated to between 250-300 degrees Fahrenheit. Once mixed together, the hot mixture is then placed on top of the existing surface where it cooled and hardened.

Type III Asphalt

Type III asphalt is also known as cold mix asphalt and is mostly used in repair projects or areas with low traffic. This type doesn’t need to be heated because it uses emulsified bitumen which can be mixed together at room temperature. After being mixed together, the cold mixture is then placed on top of the existing surface where it cooled and hardened.
